This city of nearly half a million souls retains a rich ethnic heritage from the succession of immigrants who came to work the mills beginning in the mid-19th century. High-tech firms, galleries, and museums have displaced many of the textile factories of the past. But generations of Irish, German, Italian, eastern European, Asian, and African-Caribbean immigrants give this West Yorkshire town an international flavor today. Centrally located between the Yorkshire Dales and the Pennines, Bradford provides a nice diversion and is convenient to a historic countryside where the Brontës once dwelled and armor-clad soldiers clashed in the Wars of the Roses.
