6km (4 miles) S of central Bonn
Part of greater Bonn, Bad Godesberg is one of the Rhine's oldest spa towns. It's located just opposite the legendary Siebengebirge (Seven Mountains), with a view of Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock), where, according to legend, Siegfried slew the dragon. You can still see some ancient castle ruins on the hills, such as Godesberg Castle, built in the 13th century by the electors of Cologne (its ruins have been incorporated into the Ringhotel Rheinhotel Dreesen). From the promenade along the Rhine, you can watch a flow of boats and barges wending their way up and down the river.
Most of the spa's activities center on the small but elegant 18th-century Redoute Palace. Theaters, concerts, and social functions offer a constant whirl of events. Since these events are not permanent, check with the Bonn tourist office, which publishes a weekly list of current events happening at the time of your visit and can provide additional information about the town.
