150km (93 miles) SW of Regensburg, 68km (42 miles) NW of Munich,
The largest town along the Romantic Road, with a population of about 260,000, was founded some 2,000 years ago by the Roman emperor Augustus and reached its cultural heydays during the Renaissance. You probably won’t want to spend a long time in Augsburg—a big industrial center, it’s not as attractive and atmospheric as the smaller towns along the Romantic Road and not nearly as cosmopolitan and fun as Munich, less than an hour away. That said, Augsburg is a worth a stopover as you travel along the Romantic Road to spend a few hours exploring its churches; to see the Fuggerei, a medieval housing project for the poor; and to take in the lively ambiance of a university town.
